Taiwan's food market hit hard by DEHP crisis - Channel NewsAsia
You know DEHP? in
I just heard about it today.
Do you know that Taiwan food industry is contaminated by DEHP?
What is DEHP?
What is the effect to our health?
What are the function of this DEHP to the food?
What are the foods that affected by this?
Why does it dangerous?
Well, DEHP is actually stands for Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate an ingredients that may have potential harmful effect on health.
To those who first time hearing about this, DEHP is actually added to the food product to improve its emulsification. DEHP is used widely as plasticizer in medical devices, intravenous bags and tubing, blood bags and infusion tubings and nasogastric tubes.
The low dosage of DEHP may not have significant effect on someone's health but constantly taking product with DEHP or high doses of DEHP may cause harm to ones health. Children are more likely to be easily affected by DEHP which can lead to fertility problems, testicular defects and toxicity to kidneys.
I think the news first come out on May, 27 in Philipina when their FDA (Food and Drug Administration found some food products imported from Taiwan contains DEHP.
In Malaysia the earliest news I found was on June, 10 when the ministry orders recall of DEHP effected products from Taiwan. So far there are total of 15 food products from 6 manufacturers imported from Taiwan is identified as contaminated by DEHP. You may refer to the detail list from MOH from this link.
http://moh.gov.my/press_releases/180 They do update new information there whenever there is.
The Taiwan food industry is highly affected by this issue, with products recall and all. It is said that the tourism is also going to be effected by this issue.
